Situation in Ossetia

DRAFT

Education International is appalled that pupils and teachers have been taken hostage in North Ossetia in Russia. There are reports of threats to kill the children in batches of 50 at a time and refusal to provide the hostages, some as young as 6 years old, with food, water or medicine.

Teachers around the world rise up in protest at such terrible acts, threatening schoolchildren and teachers with death while holding them in traumatic inhumane conditions. This is totally unacceptable. No political cause can justify such acts. These pupils were starting a new school year. In Russia it is called “The Day of Knowledge”. Like children around the world, they had the right to look to the future with hope, making the best of their schooling, with the help of their teachers. Now, instead the teachers must do whatever they can to protect the very lives of their pupils, against armed individuals who are apparently devoid of all sense of humanity. The calculation behind this act is despicable. Schools are vulnerable places. By attacking and using innocents as pawns in a desperate and deadly attempt at bargaining, the hostage takers and their political movement have gone beyond any reasonable limits.

Education International adds its voice to all those calling for an immediate end to this most serious situation, and the release of all the pupils and teachers. EI calls on the President of the Russian Federation to give the highest priority to the protection of innocent lives, and to take measures to establish a framework for the non-violent resolution of political conflicts.

Dear Galena and Nikolai,

Like everyone else I am deeply shocked by the terrible tragedy that has taken place in Beslan. There is no way to make sense of what has happened. It is impossible to even try to understand how any group could target children in this way.

The teachers, children and parents of Beslan will need all the support and help they can get just to keep on going.

I just want you to know that I am thinking of you. Please convey my deepest sympathy to colleagues and their students in Beslan.

Take care of yourselves.

Yours sincerely

Sheena Hanley

There are no adequate words to express our outrage at the massacre of innocent children, parents and teachers at in School 1 of Beslan, North Ossetia. We cannot conceive of the suffering of those inside the school and the anguish of relative and friends outside.

We extend our sincere condolences to the Executive Board and members of ESEUR on the terrible loss of colleagues and friends, and we ask you to convey our deepest sympathy to the families of teachers who did not survive; and support for those wounded and traumatised.

The teachers of Beslan are in our thoughts now and in the future as they rebuild their lives.
